Sonya, co-owner with Natalie, has over 10 years experience within the industry and started out her career as a hairdresser while training with Toni & Guy. A few years after qualifying, she decided to go back to college. This was to complete some training she needed in order to do a teaching qualification and that’s where her and Natalie met. This was the start of Brandon May…
She completed that teaching qualification in 2013, as we feel training is an important part of the Brandon May philosophy. Sonya is constantly reading articles, books, websites and attending training as part of her CPD.
She’s friendly and passionate about every client; she wants to make you feel special.
but loves bridal hair and men’s hair. After doing some destination weddings the last couple of years, this is something that Sonya wishes to pursue further. Combining two of her loves: hairdressing and travel. She feels that by brides having the advantage of getting to know their stylist at home, before flying out to do their wedding this offers a truly personal and unique service. Get in touch here if you think this is you!
Around hectic salon life, she busies herself with renovating her house (interior design novice alert!), taking pictures of her two cats, Prince and Pablo, as well as enjoying travelling, watching stupid animal videos and buying ankle boots.
Some bits and bobs from Sonya, below…
Meet the Brandon May Team: Co-owner Natalie did her advanced hairdressing at Toni & Guy Academy in Manchester, where she excelled in both cutting and colouring. After working for them for many years, she felt like she needed a new challenge so went back to college. This is where she met Sonya and it was decided it was time to open up a salon of her own and Brandon May was born!
She has a fun and creative approach to her work, this keeps her style fresh and current. She covers all aspects of hairdressing, but particularly enjoys balyage and hair extensions. In her free time, she loves spending time with her son.
Jessica joined Brandon May after many years at Toni & Guy and she’s been a great addition. Very experienced, Jessica has her colour specialist status. She takes great pride in being able to undertake the most tricky colour correction work. Her experience shows in her ability to be versatile. She has you covered: gents cuts, to balayage to the classic precision work. She loves a super sleek blow dry, too.
A busy bee, our Jess is studying at university alongside her hairdressing and has a busy social life, too. You’ll find her in a different city most months, travelling, or, when in Manchester, she’ll be trying out the latest cool places to eat and drink.
She can’t wait for her American road trip in the Summer – Burning Man festival here she comes! The excitement to listen to some tunes in the desert, see the sunrise and get amongst the inspirational art are what she’s keen to see.
If you think she’s The One for you, get yourself booked in by calling the salon or, by booking online here.
Take a look at some of her work, below.
Ryan has come up to Manchester from near London, where he trained with Mahogany hairdressers from age 15 as a Saturday boy. He eventually assisted with their training sessions alongside running a busy column of clients.
He made the move to Manchester 3 years ago, working for Nicky Clarke as a senior stylist. Now 28, he’s come to work full time at Brandon May now and we’re happy to have him join the team as our technician and senior stylist. He lives and breathes hair and loves those ‘Sassoon’ type cuts.
Ryan loves a jaunt on holiday and, wouldn’t be a member of the team if he didn’t, eating out so would love some tips on the best places around Didsbury!
We hope you’ll give Ryan a warm welcome. 🙂
Hannah started her hairdressing journey 7 years ago at the age of 17. Our stylist, she’s the newest member of the gang and loves colouring hair, because she feels this pushes her to learn new techniques and she loves keeping up with current trends.
You’ll see Hannah always changing her hair; whether it’s wearing extensions, her colour or donning a wig!
Little facts about Hannah: she’s dog and wrestling obsessed. Not dog wrestling, though!
Nicola knew from a young age she wanted to be a hairdresser and started out her career helping in salons age 14, before moving on to Andrew Collinge in 2009 to do her NVQ level 2 & 3. There, she also competed in an assistant competition as well as completing some advanced cutting training. After qualifying, she worked a column at their Liverpool salon.
Becoming fully immersed in our philosophy for continual development, she has completed some Tigi Copyright Colour training sessions. She has also attended label.m seminars with the team and keeps up to date with current hair trends.
She was a pioneer of our #brandonmaysundays, enabling us to open Sundays.
While she loves all aspect of the job, she especially enjoys cutting hair and making clients feel special when they walk out. Her bouncy blow dries are THE ONE! Nicola works Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays.
When she’s not busy at work, she’s busy with her two children and enjoying family days out.
Below is just some of her fabulous work. To choose Nicola, call or book online.
Nikita: She’s our right hand (wo)man, all round good-egg and, most definitely, our trusty assistant . Without her amazing ability to always second guess what’s needed, we don’t know where we’d be; she definitely makes our day run more smoothly. She also makes a great cuppa.
She has been getting stuck in with such enthusiasm, we know she’s going to be an amazing hairdresser. We’re always on the look out for hair models, so get in touch here if you’d like to join in the fun. She’s been enjoying colour work the most. We’ve been ensuring she knows it from the ground up with her theory sessions, also.
As well as all that, her giving great head massages and taking bookings for you all, she’s learning the ropes.
For those of you that don’t know Nikita yet, here’s some fun facts: she’s named after the Elton John song Nikita, her favourite food is ‘anything with chicken’ and Frank Ocean Pink + White is her favourite song.
Want to join the Brandon May Hair team? We’re currently trying to find another apprentice hairdresser to join Nikita in the valuable work she carries out. Send your CV and details to email@example.com, explaining why you’d love to join the fam.
